Welcome to Helpers of Mount Rosary, where compassion meets dedication in service. Founded by Monsignor Francis Elias D’Souza in the 1930s, our journey began as a response to the rampant tuberculosis outbreak in the Moodbidri area. Recognizing the need for holistic care, Monsignor D’Souza established a Tuberculosis sanatorium in 1937, which evolved into the Mount Rosary Charitable Institutions we know today.
As medical advancements revolutionized tuberculosis treatment, our focus shifted towards providing comprehensive support to the community. Former sanatorium buildings were repurposed into spaces like St. Ann’s Home for the Aged and the Holy Rosary and St. Pius the X wards for senior citizens and convalescent patients. Today, Mount Rosary Charitable Institutions stand as an ashram, offering sanctuary to 250 individuals.
Under the stewardship of Msgr. Edwin C. Pinto, our commitment to compassionate care deepened. In 1990, he established a Sisters Lay Pious Association, later formalized as the Helpers of Mount Rosary Diocesan religious congregation in 2005 by Bishop A.P. D’Souza. With 75 dedicated members, our reach extends beyond our institution, serving in 21 convents across Karnataka, Mumbai, Mizoram, Austria, and Italy.
Our mission continues to flourish with the inauguration of the Mount Rosary Hospital in 2019, a testament to our unwavering dedication to serving those in need. Join us in our journey as we strive to make a difference, one act of kindness at a time.
“Helpers of Mount Rosary Religious Congregation was founded not only for doing caritative works, but also to help sisters of the Congregation to become Christlike and achieve holiness in life.”
When it was founded in the year 1990, the objectives were, collaborating in the pastoral work in the village parishes, to serve in homes for the aged, destitute, sick and dying, to do health work in Institutions and in villages and to do human development work in villages around Moodbidri.
An active Religious body changes its priorities according to the needs of the time. it is already 30 years of service of HMR sisters. Pastoral work is being done by trained lay leaders both men and women of the parishes. Human development work is also done by trained leaders both men and women of the villages. But to serve the aged and dying needs real Christ like love, training and experience. Service in village hospitals needs the spirit of Mother Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, to serve with love and compassion.
Therefore the future HMR sisters are to be imbibed with the service of Jesus Christ given to the poorest of the poor in His public life and also the Spirit of compassion shown by Mother Mary, at the foot of the Cross, bearing the suffering along with her Son Jesus and Comforting Him and the thief, a sinner before, now changed to be a saint.
